To provide you with a better understanding of wisdom teeth, we have provided the following multimedia presentation. Many common questions pertaining to wisdom teeth are discussed.
One of the most frequent questions we as Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are asked is "Do I need to have my wisdom teeth removed and if I do, why"? These are very good questions as almost everyone will be faced with this question at some point in their life. The decision to have your wisdom teeth removed must be individualized for each patient.
Although many individuals may benefit from the removal of their wisdom teeth, others may not derive significant benefits. There are many conditions associated with wisdom teeth that would be an indication for their removal. As a general rule patients will benefit from the early removal of "high risk" wisdom teeth, rather than wait until the teeth become symptomatic or cause damage to adjacent teeth.
Dental implants are changing the way people live. They are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth which look, feel, last and function like new natural teeth. Patients with dental implants can smile with confidence.

The best way to visualize a dental implant is to compare it to a natural tooth. A tooth has two parts, the crown and root. The crown is visible in your mouth and is what you bite and chew with. The root anchors the crown to the bone and gums. When a tooth is lost, both crown and root are removed. When the tooth is replaced, the root is replaced first and later a new crown is made to fit on this new root. Essentially an implant is a prosthetic or artificial root.
The term "orthognathic surgery" refers to a variety of procedures designed to move the upper and/or lower jaws into a different, more appropriate, position.
Some individual’s upper and lower jaws do not fit together in an appropriate fashion. Patients with severe "over" or "underbite" problems may have noticeable changes in their appearance, most often seen in their profile. Their chin or mandible (lower jaw) may appear to jut out or, in contrast, may appear to be underdeveloped. In other patients, the bite problems may not be so severe that their appearance is changed but the teeth will not fit together appropriately. Orthognathic surgery was developed to correct these jaw discrepancies by moving the affected jaw(s) into their appropriate positions.
